This thesis envisions the sites most affected by El Niño and La Niña as an opportunity to create an interchangeable and adaptable system based on opposite climate conditions: extreme rain and dry seasons. The thesis studies the conception of “nonhuman” agricultural communities that can adjust to these “human” chaotic changes in climate. The goals are to create an integrated system of living and farming that would adapt to the effects of El Niño and La Niña while revealing the fluctuating experiences of each phenomenon. The proposed design is an irrigation and infrastructure system that utilizes the three types of water available during each phenomenon: fresh, brackish and salt; each type produces its own crop. The adaptive design strategies of the proposal allow the architectural and landscape expressions to manifest the dynamic experiences of both the flood and drought.
